The 2024 Inquiry Group will focus on Ethnic Studies in the English Language Arts Classroom. Meeting monthly, Teacher Consultants will have the opportunity to delve deeply into Ethnic Studies frameworks and disciplines as they are relevant in the English Language Arts classroom.

"Active Reading as a Liberatory Practice: A Critical Examination of Passive Voice in Dominant Historical Narratives"

Presented by Hannah Hohle (California History Social Science Project and Area 3 Writing Project) for the secondary grades

"Writing with purpose and conviction: Leveraging Genre Writing for Change" presented by Sovandara Chhin (K/1 teacher from Birch Lane Elementary, DJUSD) for grades K-6.

"Scary Stories for Young Writers" presented by Karen Briggs (Family and Community Engagement, EGUSD) for the elementary classroom

"Thrills and Chills: Building writing muscles through genre exploration" presented by Chris Matthei (Fern Bacon Middle School, SCUSD) for secondary grades

Ghost Stories and Local Legends: A multi-genre horror unit presented by Jamie Kerr (California Middle School, SCUSD). Created for the secondary classroom but educators from all grades and disciplines welcome.

The California History-Social Science Project, Bay Area Writing Project, and Area 3 Writing Project present a two week professional development workshop for K-12 teachers that focuses on examining critical literacies in Ethnic Studies.

Even our youngest students can write, but their needs are very different from older students. You will learn a multitude of strategies to help beginning writers enter the writing community from a kindergarten teacher with 30+ years of experience. 

The summer institute brings teachers of diverse backgrounds together to examine and critique research, discuss writing practices, and engage in professional and personal writing. This year's summer institute will be comprised of a combination of in-person and online sessions. 

A community of readers is what makes an ELA classroom come to life. Come learn practical and sustainable systems and strategies to center choice, create a culture of independent reading, and harness the joy of books to foster deeper thinking and student writing.

Struggling to find time and motivation for students to write? Not to fear!…We are here to give you oodles of strategies for bringing joy to the entire writing process. This online workshop is designed for 7-12th grade teachers but all grades and disciplines are welcome.
