"Active Reading as a Liberatory Practice: A Critical Examination of Passive Voice in Dominant Historical Narratives"

Presented by Hannah Hohle (California History Social Science Project and Area 3 Writing Project) for the secondary grades

In this workshop, we will address the importance of teaching historical context for the books that we read in an English Language Arts classroom. Central to our inquiry is the following question: How can we critically look at the use of passive voice and active voice to examine the power of language in historical perspectives? As we delve into our essential question, we will look at how ES frameworks (such as criticality, curriculum as counternarrative, colonization and decolonization, and hegemony) can help our students critically read historical texts and literature in the ELA classroom. During this workshop, participants will engage with a variety of text genres and student work as they reflect on their own practice.
