Storytelling as Pedagogy: Empowering the Writer through Social Justice Narrative Presented by Amy Sept (MTSS Specialist, TRUSD) for K-12 (strategy works for all grades but mentor texts and resources used in presentation will be for secondary)

  • How do we get our non-writers writing? So often our students who might benefit the most from personal narrative as a powerful processing and regulation tool (the pen is mightier than the sword, remember?) don't have the confidence to write or access to the written language. In this workshop we will explore a variety of entry points to writing through narrative storytelling tools, and ready to use frameworks. Participants will examine how narratives and counternarratives from ourselves and our community, can be leveraged to empower every student to find their voice. Leave this session with a story that you didn't know you had to tell, and an easy way for your students to tell (and write!) theirs.

Environmental Justice, Flood Risk, and Multimodal Literacy Presented by Quinn Cataldi (Grant Union High School, SCUSD) for secondary grades. CANCELLED

Students work through identifying problems in their community, crafting opinion writing about how to solve those problems, and writing persuasive pieces to convince others to join their cause. Along the way students learn how to hook their audience, use descriptive language, and the many ways they can express themselves. Join us as we explore ways to support the change makers in our classrooms!
